Bio Felicia Thomas was born in Houston, TX to a father that loved music, the arts, reading, and learning. From a very young age she was exposed to dance and music and was encouraged to read and explore. At as young as 5 years old, Felicia began attending a Fine Arts Magnet school. There she learned to play the flute, participated in Theatre, Creative Writing, and Dance.
Felicia's love for the arts only grew and she continued dancing and writing throughout high school. She continued to pursue her dreams by obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Dance and English. At the time, her dance training focused on Modern and Ballet styles. After obtaining her B.A. in Dance and English, Felicia moved back to Houston and performed for "Second Generation Dance Company" and "Urban Souls Dance Company". 2 modern dance companies with a strong bases in Horton technique. Felicia then received a path changing opportunity to perform with a Houston area African dance company, "Kucheza Ngoma". This opportunity presented both a new movement vocabulary and a deeper appreciation for cultural arts & social dance. She later became a member of the company, learning and performing West African, Caribbean Dance Hall, and Caribbean Folk Dance styles.
After beginning training in West African and Caribbean, Felicia began to take more interest in the historical context of African diasporic dances. She began pursuing a Master of Arts in Cross-Cultural Studies and blogging about her research with topics spanning from cultural arts to culture and religion.
Felicia also furthered her learning in various dances of the African Diaspora and began taking classes in Afro-Cuban salsa, Afro-Brazilian dance styles, and Rio Carnaval Style Samba lessons. She then began performing with "LD Dance Company", a samba company, for 2 years.
Felicia continues to train in African, Afro-Latin, Caribbean, and modern dance styles. She has also presented original choreography with much of her work using afro-diasporic movement and focusing on spiritual healing. She is also a current "Artist in Residence" with Dance Source Houston! Felicia performs Samba styles & specializes in Afro-Contemporary Dance where she fuses her modern background with movement vocabulary from the African diaspora.
